Frequently Asked Questions - Residential
What is a solar energy system and how does it work?
Solar energy systems work by converting light from the sun into energy which you can use in your home or export to the grid. Panels on your roof generate DC (Direct Current) Electricity, this is fed into an inverter which converts the DC electricity into 240 volt AC (Alternating Current) electricity which can be used in your home.
What is the process after I have signed up?
Once you have chosen your prefered solar package, we will contact your power network provider and get authorisation to have your system installed. Once approval has been obtained, we arrange the installation with you (usual lead time is 1-3 weeks).
How long does installation take?
6.5kW - 1 to 2 Days. (Standard installation)
Are there any rebates?
State and Federal Government both provide assistance when you install solar systems. 1. You receive a rebate when you purchase the system (subtracted off the purchase price. 2. Electricity retailers will buy back the power you don't use while solar power is active.
Do I need planning approval?
Usually not! Some exceptions include: If your property is heritage listed you will need planning approval. If you are part of a complex governed by a strata agreement, you will need approval from the body corporate
What if my house doesn't face North?
Solar Power systems can be installed on roofs facing anywhere from due east to due west. North is best for absolute production, however a well designed system will match your solar production to your home’s electricity consumption.
What if I have a low pitched or flat roof?
This concern is easily resolved by tilting frames which can be installed at an extra expense. We recommend a slight pitch to allow for water runoff and self cleaning.
Do I still need power from the grid?
Yes! Your solar system generates electricity during peak daylight hours only. Any electricity produced during this time that is not consumed will be sold back to the grid. During the night when your solar system is not working, you will draw electricity from the grid.
What about when it's cloudy?
Your solar system generates electricity during cloudy days but is less productive than sunny days.
How long will my solar power system last?
Depending on the system installed there is a performance guarantee of 25 years for panels and up to 5 years on inverters.
Frequently Asked Questions - Commercial
How much roof space do I need for my solar system?
On average you would need 8sqm per 1kW. For example a 40kW system, you would need 320sqm of available roof space.
Can my roof handle the weight of a solar system?
YES! Site inspections are carried out prior to the installation of any solar system to ensure that the roof is structurally sound to carry the weight of the solar panels. During these inspections we also consider the material of the roof (asphalt roll roofing, wood, metal, clay tiles and slate to name a few of the most common) and the condition of the roof. Solar panels are designed to be kept on your roof for a period of up to 25 years, because of this we need to ensure that the roof structure can hold the panel weight. Typically solar panels weigh around 1-2 kgs per square foot with the mounting structures. In most cases, with a total panel weight of approximately 20kgs per panel. In some cases, we engage specialist engineers to ensure solar panels can safely be installed.
My roof is over 20 meters high, can I install solar panels?
All installations over 20 meters high are inspected by structural engineers. Heavier grade clamping and rail is used in order to withstand increased wind loading.
I am renting; can I benefit from solar?
Absolutely, Vilis Power Solutions can assist with negotiations with landlords to install solar systems on their rental properties which will result in a win for the landlord and the tenant. Tenants are now able to rent their solar system from Vilis Power Solutions and benefit from month one. Savings always out perform the monthly rental payment. The average we see is a 50% saving in electricity costs when consuming rental solar power.
Can I benefit from putting solar on my investment property?
Absolutely, in a study commission by Origin Energy it found that tenants would be prepared to pay between $5 and $10 per week more in rent. Also speak to your tax accountant about solar panels being a depreciating asset. Building owners typically have a payback period of 2 years.
Can I create additional revenue from my investment property?
Our autonomous cloud-based billing systems generate invoices, track payments and can also directly bill your tenants via credit card or direct debit. Solar Investment returns are 25% per year.
How long will it take for my solar system to pay me back?
This will depend on the brand of solar components of your system (ie. the initial investment amount) along with how much of the PV solar generation you consume. For example, if your business is open 7 days per week your savings will automatically be 29% higher than if the same business only opened for 5 days and therefore the payback will happen quicker.
Can I finance my solar system?
With fast approvals and $0.00 up front, you can pay for your system over time and start saving money on your electricity bills straight away.
Do I need Council approval?
Every building is unique and is assessed on a case by case basis. Items to be considered are: • state building codes and regulations, which can be provided by your local council. • whether your property is within a conservation or heritage overlay • the classification of your building under the Australian Building Code (Class 2-9 buildings may be subject to different approval requirements) • the size and position of your solar PV system • the total weight of your panels at any one point of attachment to the building • the design of your system • structural integrity of your building • whether additional electrical or building work is required to accommodate the solar system Vilis Power Solutions will work with you to ensure that all of the necessary building surveys and permits are in place before installing your solar system.
How long does an installation take?
Depends on the size of the system: - 10kW system 2-3 days - 20kW system 3-4 days - 40kW system 5-6 days - 100kW system 3-4 weeks
Can I increase the number of solar panels to my system at a later date?
Yes you can. The scope of work will depend on the capacity of your current inverter and network operator regulations.
Are there any factors that could reduce the amount of energy generated?
Unfortunately Yes, Cloudy weather, dirty panels, shading from trees or other structures on your roof.
Can I completely wipe out my electricity bill?
Yes you can, however you will always have supply charges which aren’t related to consumption. Other considerations that may prevent this are do you consume electricity overnight.
If there is a blackout will I still have electricity
Unless you have a battery you will not have any power. Solar inverters are programmed to automatically shut down during an electricity blackout. This is a safety measure to protect HV electricians while they repair the network.
